Zellige

Zellige is the Moroccan craft of glazed terracotta tile, cut into small geometric pieces and set side by side to form patterns. Fès is its historic home. On our tables, a zellige mosaic forms the top, carried by a sculpted metal base.

Character

What gives zellige its look.

Glaze: Each piece of tile is enamelled, which gives zellige its deep colour and its soft shine. The tone varies slightly from one piece to the next.
Geometry: Patterns are built from small cut pieces: stars, rosettes, borders and bands that repeat around a centre.
Colour: Green, blue, ochre, terracotta red, black and cream are the colours of the designs shown on this site. Other palettes can be discussed.
Handmade irregularity: Because the pieces are cut and set one by one, small differences in colour, surface and joints are part of the craft, not a defect.

On a table

A mosaic top on a sculpted base.

The top: A surface made of many small pieces, in the shape of the table: round, oval, rectangular or hexagonal.
The base: Sculpted or openwork metal, dark or bronze-toned, designed for each model. Some designs add gold-toned details.

The pictures of these tables are design concepts. Each piece is made to order, and the finished piece may differ in colours, details and proportions: dimensions and finish are confirmed in your quotation.

Applications

Where it belongs.

Zellige suits the pieces that carry a pattern: choose the kind of piece to see the collection, then filter by material.

Care

Living with zellige.

Wipe a zellige top with a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaner, and dry it. Avoid abrasive pads and strong acids, which can dull the glaze or the joints, and protect the edges from knocks. If you are unsure, ask us: tell us the model and what happened.
