Marble
Marble is a crystalline stone formed when limestone is transformed by heat and pressure deep in the earth. It has been cut into tables, floors and sculpture for thousands of years, and it remains one of the most recognisable materials in furniture: dense, cool to the touch, and different in every block.
Character
What gives marble its look.
- Veining
- Veins are traces of minerals present as the stone formed. They can be fine and grey, broad and golden, or almost absent, and they run across the surface without repeating.
- Colour variation
- From white to grey, beige, green or black, depending on where the stone was quarried. Tone also moves within a single slab.
- Natural pattern
- No two slabs share the same pattern. A table shows a particular passage of the stone, and its beauty is in that specificity.
- Stone density
- Marble is dense and takes a fine finish, which gives it its depth under light. It is also a natural stone: it asks for a little attention.
Finishes
Honed or polished.
- Honed
- A smooth matte surface, calm and soft to the touch. It reflects little light and tends to be more forgiving of small marks.
- Polished
- A reflective surface that shows the depth of the stone and its veining. It also shows marks and etching more readily.

Natural variation
A photograph is a portrait, not a copy.
Marble varies from one block to the next: veining, tone and movement. Your table will not match a photograph exactly. This variation is the character of the stone, not a defect, and it is what makes each piece one of a kind.

Care
Living with marble.
Marble is sensitive to acids: wine, citrus, vinegar and many household cleaners can dull or etch the surface. Wipe spills promptly with a soft cloth, use coasters and trivets, and clean with water or a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
