Travertine
Travertine forms where mineral-rich spring water deposits calcium carbonate, layer after layer. It is the warm stone of Roman streets and Mediterranean houses: ivory, beige and honey in tone, with a linear grain and the natural cavities left by gas and plant matter.
Character
What gives travertine its look.
- Warm tones
- From ivory to warm beige and honey. The colour is soft and even from a distance, and shifts from one block to the next.
- Natural cavities
- Pores and cavities remain where gas and plant matter were trapped as the stone formed. They give travertine its texture, and they are part of the stone.
- Porosity
- Travertine is more porous than many stones. It is a lovely, tactile surface that likes a gentle routine.
- Mineral texture
- A linear grain, with bands that follow the way the stone was laid down. Cut across the grain or with it, the same block looks different.
Surface
Filled or unfilled.
- Unfilled
- The cavities are left open, for a textured and more rustic surface.
- Filled
- The cavities are filled, for a smoother surface that is easier to wipe.
- Honed
- A smooth matte finish, soft and calm.
- Tumbled
- Softened edges and a gentler, more worn look.

Natural variation
No two blocks are the same.
Tone, grain and the size and number of cavities vary from block to block. A travertine table will not match a photograph exactly, and the variation is the character of the stone.

Care
Living with travertine.
Because travertine is porous, wipe spills quickly, keep acidic liquids off the surface, use coasters and trivets, and clean with a soft cloth and a mild, stone-safe cleaner. Whether a sealer is advisable depends on the finish and the use: ask us.
